For many Americans, Cinco de Mayo means enjoying Mexican food and drinks. Interestingly, some research firms report that Americans buy more beer for Cinco de Mayo than for the Super Bowl or St. Patrick`s Day. But Cinco de Mayo, which means May 5 in Spanish, is probably one of the most misunderstood Mexican holidays.
If you went to any bar on May 5th and asked `What`s this day about?`, they would mostly be clueless. Nevertheless, delicious Mexican food, beer, tequila, mezcal and other Mexican spirits would widely be consumed. Classic margaritas and tequila shots with salt n lime remain fashionable, but creative mixologists are always inventing new cocktails to entice their patron`s enjoyment. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico`s Independence Day, which is celebrated in September. Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemorates an underdog victory over France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Cinco de Mayo, which isn`t widely celebrated in Mexico, continued to be celebrated in Puebla and, perhaps more significantly, by Mexican-Americans north of the border. Today, Cinco de Mayo has become more of an American holiday than a Mexican one. Consequently, Cinco de Mayo is a major economic driver for business owners and beverage companies across the United States.
Cinco de Mayo is a day of pride for Mexican-Americans. It is reminder of how many times Mexico has been invaded by other countries. This one day, Mexico won the battle. And thankfully we are all enjoying it to this day.
