Did you know that the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in NYC in 1762, by homesick Irishman? A band of Irish ex-patriots and military members serving with the British Army held the parade at the time when “wearing of the green”, was a symbol of Irish Pride, but banned in Ireland. Read on for more interesting facts. Up until the late 1970’s pubs in Ireland were closed on St. Patrick’s day. And not until 1995 that the first parade was held in Dublin! The Irish government approved a five day event including art events, plays, concerts and parades. In Ireland, the day is a holy day of obligation, where many faithful Catholics attend mass and return home to a large roast dinner. Very few pubs in Ireland serve green beer, unlike many American bars and pubs on that day. Check out our St. Patrick’s Day recipes, search for “st pat”. Slainte!
