If you`re like me, you thought the Moscow Mule had it’s origins in Moscow, or at least in Russia. It just goes to show that not everything is in a name. Well, part of the Mule originated in Moscow, the copper mug. In the early 1900’s Sophie Berezinski was spending time with her father at the Moscow Copper Company, were they developed a copper mug based on Sophie’s design. When hard times hit Russia, Sophie came to America with 2000 mugs and settled in NYC, where she met her husband Max. So “how does that become a cocktail”, you might ask? In 1941, Sophie, along with two friends create the drink at the Cock n’ Bull on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, California, serving it in a copper mug. In the late 1940’s, one of the bartenders went cross country sharing polaroid photos of the drink in bars. As a result, it became very popular. The cold war put an end to it’s popularity for 30 years and the poor mule fell out of favor. It is now one of the world’s most popular drinks, and has surpassed the Margarita in popularity.
